Gathagram School began with the image of a child learning beneath a tree. Conceived as a Waldorf school, the project views education as a holistic experience, where architecture becomes a landscape for learning through curiosity, movement, interaction, and play.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
A central courtyard with a large tree forms the heart of the school, around which the spaces are organised. Classrooms connect with courtyards, corridors, bridges, steps, and informal gathering areas, creating opportunities for learning beyond the classroom. Visual connections encourage interaction and awareness of the larger school community.
Order and Freedom
The classroom blocks follow a clear structure, while the spaces between them remain flexible and unexpected. Shifting levels, courtyards, bridges, and voids create varied experiences, balancing order with freedom and familiarity with discovery.
Spaces for Gathering and Solitude
A hierarchy of open spaces supports both collective activities and moments of solitude. Large courts accommodate assemblies and performances, while smaller spaces encourage conversation and quiet reflection. Brick and exposed concrete provide a tactile material palette, while circular openings frame views of light, sky, and landscape. The school is ultimately designed as an environment that allows children to explore, gather, observe, pause, and wonder.
